THE empty eyes of every drug addict were once filled with hope; Where there is now a desperate craving, there was once potential.
And for too many where there was once life and a future, there is only death. That is what drug addiction does. Behind the numbers and the statistics of drug addiction related deaths, there are stories of real people with real hopes. Men and Women who are robbed of life by the chemicals they pump into their bodies.
One of them was John Courtney. You may have been shocked by the picture we printed of the 21-year-old; doubled over, syringe in hand, slumped down and very, very dead.
We make no apology for showing you the reality of drugs. The other picture of John, the one taken when he was twelve, is noticibly different. His eyes are full of light and life. His mouth is turned upwards-grinning without a care in the world. Then he was a young Geordie boy who some said could have been the next Alan Shearer, a snapper-up of chances.

But at the age of 18 he took one opportunity which would kill him -
he tried heroin for the first time.
His once promising life quickly took a turn down an all too familiar path. John soon was addicted to heroin-he was a full-fledged heroin addict. And addicts MUST have their medicine, so he turned to crime to feed the monkey on his back-spending time in jails and prisons whenever he got caught.
Just three years removed from that very first dance with heroin, and John Courtney was dead. Doctors, Psychologists, Law Enforcement; they all give us their theories. Theories differ.
But reality, the ruined lives of the addict and those that love them, the destroyed relationships and communities, the families and friends who gather somewhere each week...to mourn the loss of yet another addict and watch.
Watch as still more continue the trip and know that they too have the same destination. The grave.
